Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, D.Litt., Professor of Buddhist Philosophy in the Otani University, Kyoto, was born in 1870. He is probably now the greatest living authority on Buddhist philosophy, and is certainly the greatest authority on Zen Buddhism. His major works in English on the subject of Buddhism number a dozen or more, and of his works in Japanese as yet unknown to the West there are at least eighteen. He is, moreover, as a chronological bibliography of books on Zen in English clearly shows, the pioneer teacher of the subject outside Japan, for except for Kaiten Nukariya's Religion of the Samurai (Luzac and Co., 1913) nothing was known of Zen as a living experience, save to the readers of The Eastern Buddhist (1921-1939), until the publication of Essays in Zen Buddhism (Volume I) in 1927.Dr. Suzuki writes with authority. Not only has he studied original works in Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese and Japanese, but he has an up-to-date knowledge of Western thought in German and French as well as in the English which he speaks and writes so fluently. He is, moreover, more than a scholar; he is a Buddhist.

Although this book was written in 1960 it gives you a feel for Buddhism and some of its gathas and prayers plus one of its most beloved teachings of the Ten Ox story which my dear teacher and friend Father Robert Kennedy writes in the introduction to his book Zen Gifts to Christians: "this poetic picture story, a boy herdsman, stands for none other than you the reader." Suzuki's rendering shares the story with pictures and short pithy statements before and below each picture. I think you will enjoy it, especially if you are a Buddhist or interested in its teachings and musings.Product details

Love this book.
You will find the essence of zen practice in these pages along with the sutras and words passed on from masters to students. As with all of the great teachings written and spoken, the song rests in between the lines.
there are usually good reasons why we recognize certain masters of the past and forget others.
D.T. Suzuki became famous because people read and heard material similar to this book. Well, here it is.

This author came highly recommended which led me to purchase the e-book. I have found every aspect of the book enlightening and educational. The commentary has allowed me to deepen my zen practice by not only just 'going through the motions', but really understanding the aims of the various elements of zen, zazen and alike.
I would recommend this e-book to everyone from those wanting to explore the zen culture through to those practitioners who are wanting to deepen their own practice and understanding.
Suzuki often has a slightly different interpretation than other popular authors and his perspective is always worth reading. This is a bit more of a Buddhist reference book but it still benefits from Suzuki's treatment.
This review is for the quality of the HARDCOVER version released by Filiquarian Publishing, LLC, 2007. And a lousy job they did. Luckily I'm still in my return window.
Today I went to used book store to find the Suzkuki's Essays and stumbled across a used version of this book published by Grove Weidenfeld 1960.
The Filiquarian Pub. version doesn't have
* The illustrations or Plates
* A detailed table of contents
* The original editor's notes that says "All references to the Author's `Essays in Zen Buddhism,' Series One and Two, and to his `Introduction to Zen Buddhism' are to the second edition of these works, published in `The Complete Works of D.T. Suzuki'."
* "The Thundering Silence of Vimalakirti" which appears on the 1960 edition just before the first chapter, possibly because it was wrapped around a graphic.
Further publisher flaws
* They misspelled the "Suzuki" on the cover of the book, "Sukuki."
* The footnotes have been converted to endnotes for the "short section" not the end of the chapter so they are close. BUT they are in the same typeface as the rest of the text. They are wrapped in square brackets but that doesn't help much when footnotes can be several paragraphs long. This took a bit to figure out. It's as if someone scanned the original and didn't bother to correctly do the footnotes or printed out a "" version for hardcover.
I haven't finished comparing the two copies so I don't know what else is missing or screwed up.
Publisher-wise this book is travesty. Search for a used copy if you need this or look into the paperback version from BiblioBazaar available from . NOTE I haven't looked at that version but this hardcover is just ... bad.
